Intellon Powerline Solutions Selected for IPTV in South Korea

Millinet has chosen Intellon’s INT5500 and INT6300 ICs to enable in-home distribution of KT’s MegaTV-branded IPTV services over phone lines in homes throughout South Korea. Intellon’s ICs are used in Millinet’s Mega Bridge MMB-100/200 adapters, supplied when customers subscribe to KT MegaTV services. These adapters supply the IPTV content over existing phone lines in the home, allowing customers to view content over TVs plugged into any convenient phone jack.

According to Millinet, homes in South Korea have a phone jack in nearly every room, making content delivery over existing phone lines especially convenient for customers. Millinet selected both the Intellon HomePlug 1.0 with Turbo (85 Mbps PHY-rate) and the Intellon HomePlug AV (200 Mbps PHY-rate) ICs for their solutions. Both solutions are easy to install, easy to use and robust. They deliver reliable, “entertainment-grade” standard and high definition television services to subscribing viewers.

Will Broadband Powerline (BPL) Take Off?

Research and Markets has released the new report 2006 Global Broadband Powerlines - Moving into Home Management 3rd Edition. In the report, a key highlight is that there are over 170,000 BPL subscribers worldwide in 2006. Impressive or not? Also from the report, around 100 commercial BPL trials are currently taking place worldwide, with about a third of these under way in the United States, and the large majority originating in Europe. While I do expect the numbers to increase, I am interested to see how BPL fares against competing technologies such as HomePNA.

Research and Markets has announced the addition of Broadband Powerline Networking Gets a Jolt from IPTV to their offering.

Powerline networking offers a solution with some advantages over coax and twisted-pair cabling for in-home deployment, especially in regions with little existing coax or phone line jacks, such as in EMEA, China, and many Asia-Pacific countries. At this time, we do not believe that there will be one clear technology winner in the networking interface race between coax, phone line, and powerline; however, our current analysis points toward powerline as winning on a worldwide scale.
