Occam Networks takes a leading role in the development of Quality of Experience and Quality of Service recommendations for the deployment of IPTV over DSL. The Broadband Forum’s Technical Report 176, “ADSL2Plus Configuration Guidelines for IPTV” co-editor and contributor Dov Zimring also serves as Occam’s Director of Strategic Technology and Solutions.
QoE and QoS requirements for the delivery of IPTV over DSL networks have presented service providers with significant challenges. Noise and other changes to the DSL transmission channel faced when deploying IPTV over DSL access or home networks have at times resulted in packet loss and degradation in video quality. TR-176 enumerates profile parameter guidelines for service providers to address this challenge and ensure a consistent, high-quality IPTV experience to subscribers over DSL networks. The report integrates input from service providers, equipment vendors and DSL silicon vendors who recognized the importance of creating guidelines to support IPTV over DSL.
Future Broadband Forum reports will expand on TR-176 by including profiles for Dynamic Spectrum Management/Dynamic Line Management and VDSL2 profiles for IPTV. The Broadband Forum released TR-176 in September 2008 and includes it in the Forum’s BroadbandSuite 3.0 showcase at TelcoTV 2008.
